Brief:

Derived from a master class with world renowned book designer
Irma Boom.

Outcomes:

Collaborative book.
Only 24 copies were made.

Description:

22 students made a book of 22 stories from a book of their choice in which only the first text page was used. It was an interpretation in type and/or image in one or more signatures. Irma Boom designed the front and back covers. My section in the book can be found on pages 205-220. I chose the book ‘Type and Typography’ and challenged what typography claims to be.

I started by asking the question, ‘what is typography?’ and then proceeded to display the information from the first text page of the book in crazy experimental ways, breaking all the usual rules for displaying text. As the pages progress the text eventually calms down, becomes more legible and begins to fit into the standard book design layout.
