Magazine analysis (2 parts)
Bath Spa Uni, 2007
Brief
Create a visual response to an obscure magazine.
Outcomes
Poster / skeleton grid
Description (part 1 - Mapping)
The obscure magazine I chose was 'Clay Shooting'. After analysing the cover of the last 12 issues it became apparent that the colour scheme hardly changed from issue to issue.
The first four colours (from left to right) were always the same as they included the logo for the magazine. The fifth colour was always the colour of the grass in which the photo was taken, the sixth the sky, the seventh the skin of the shooter and so on.
To communicate all of this, a series of colour boxes were drawn up.
Description (part 2 - Grid)
After analysing the spreads within 'Clay Shooting' I determined that throughout all articles, only three different grid structures were used. One was a 3 column grid (shown in white), one was a 4 column grid (shown in green), and the last was a 6 coumn grid (shown in blue). The 6 column grid was used for heavy information such as results from competitions that included a lot of data.
As a result, this variety of the grid was stretched both above and below the other two grids. Margins remained the same for all grids. Pictured is my visual response to this, a skeleton grid.
