For me, graphic design is more than a visually aesthetic advertisement. The 'big' picture is
important and I consider myself an ideas person but the attention to detail is what makes a
good design transform into a great design. Text is extremely important and should be treated
as such. No self-respecting designer should trust the default settings on a computer.
Typography is one of my favourite parts of graphic design on both the large and the small scale.
I strongly value the geometry and placement decisions of the elements of a design. The tried
and trusted methods of the golden ratio and number sequences should be utlised, where
appropriate. Colour has become an important aspect of my own designs. Having written an
8000 word essay on the use and significance of colour in graphic design, I embrace colour as
an important ingredient of my own work. Not just for aesthetic reasons but to reflect more in-
depth interpretations of my designs. I am fascinated with the psychology of colour – why does
a particular colour choice have a different meaning and response than another?
As with my other passion, playing the drums, I feel mastering the instrument or in this case,
graphic design, is a stimulating and enjoyable journey.
